Wheelchair Basketball

About WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

Wheelchair basketball is a sport for individuals with a primary physical disability affecting ones lower body. The sport generally follows NCAA rules, with a few modifications for the use of sports wheelchairs. Athletes do NOT need to be everyday wheelchair users. The sports wheelchair is simply a tool used to level the playing field for those who have gait instability or an inability to run due to paralysis or other diagnosis. Our respective teams are named the “Jr Bulls”. Our Jr Bulls teams play within the North American Wheelchair Basketball League (NAWBL) and/or the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) league system.

Season details

Synergy Jr Bulls wheelchair basketball hosts Varsity and Prep options based on age. The season for both runs from October through April, culminating with the NWBA National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament (pending qualification). We practice weekly and participate in roughly 6 weekend tournaments throughout the season that may be held in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana or other states.

JR BULLS Prep (ages 5-12)

The PREP program focuses on basic skills development. There is an emphasis on fun, significant playing time, comraderie and socialization. PREP level plays on an 8.5′ hoop and utilizes a Spalding NBA Rookie Gear Composite Size 27.5 ball.

JR BULLS VARsity (ages 13-high school)

The VARSITY program focuses on intermediate skill development, understanding and execution of strategy and a push towards successful performance outcomes. We work with athletes who have hopes of playing in college to maximize their chance of receiving available college scholarships. Varsity level plays on a 10′ hoop with a Molten BG4500 Size 7 basketball.

Jr Bulls Summer Training

Work on refining your wheelchair basketball skills over the summer while improving your fitness in this hybrid training program. There will be a focus on interactive play (rather than drills) as well as strength training.

athlete & family Testimonials

“I cannot put into words what Synergy and various programs (specifically wheelchair basketball) have done for my son. This program has provided all aspects of “team” that my other able-bodied children also receive. No child should be denied the ability to find a sport that they can comfortably participate in and feel the joy of sportmanship. It’s not about winning or losing… it’s about the smiles that every child has after the practices and games.”

John Beutel, Parent of a Synergy Athlete

“At Synergy, I have been able to join a team and play at a competitive level. I have had so much fun playing in tournaments with my teammates and meeting kids from other teams.”

Jeffrey Birnbaum, Synergy Athlete

“My boys did not know other kids who had similar disabilities. Thanks to adaptive sports, they have met so many other people their age who are like them: kids who may have a physical limitation, but are still strong, fast and competitive athletes.”

Carol Wolniakowski, Parent of a Synergy Athlete
