Equipment Lending

About EQUIPMENT LENDING

Adaptive sports equipment can be a huge financial barrier. Sports wheelchairs typically cost $2,000-$3,000 per chair with hand cycles and other adaptive mobility devices costing even more. That is why we maintain an inventory of sports wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment to allow participation in our programs without this barrier. We also allow usage of this equipment outside of our programs for individuals with a primary physical disability. Pieces of equipment may be requested for specified time frames, whether that be for a weekend event or for an extended training period for a race. Anyone borrowing equipment must sign a WDSRA waiver and agrees to maintain and return the equipment in the condition in which it was borrowed. Options for adaptive equipment are listed below.

Overcoming Barriers

Sports Wheelchairs

Sports wheelchairs (AKA “sportschairs”) are used for wheelchair basketball, wheelchair softball, and other similar sports. They can also be used in a limited fashion to do short fun runs/walks and other community events. It is important to always be on level ground while using these. A sports wheelchair is simply a mobility tool. Many individuals who use sportschairs are not everyday wheelchair users. Sportschairs allow individuals (who may be ambulatory or everyday wheelchair users) to perform athletic maneuvers safely to overcome challenges with gait, balance and general mobility.

Boccia Ball Set

A competition set of Boccia balls can run $400+ as a starting price. We have an inventory of Boccia balls that we can lend out for use in training or competition. A full set includes 6 red, 6 blue and 1 white “Jack” ball. Each set is in a protective case.

Racing Chair

Racing wheelchairs (AKA Track Chairs) are 3-wheeled specialized wheelchairs meant for moving fast. These chairs are a running equivalent as there are no gears to adjust effort and are propelled with one’s arms/hands. Chairs are built to specific sizes. We will do our best to match you with the size you need.

Hand Cycle

Handcycles are 3-wheeled versions of bicycles that are low to the ground and provide stability as well as the ability to power the bike’s movement with one’s hands rather than one’s legs. There are a variety of setups of handcycles depending on the intended use (racing, touring, recreational). These are not intended as a running equivalent as they are geared and allow users to adjust levels of effort to maneuver over hills and other terrain.
